Indoor Photoshoot

This past weekend we held our first major photoshoot of 2013. This time, rather than having it at a beach like we normally do, we had it indoors. The weather has been unusually windy and rainy since mid-December making planning an outdoor photoshoot difficult and risky. We’ve pushed our normal early-year beach shoot to April or May.

We experimented with a green screen backdrop so we have some flexibility on how we use the pictures. And it also served as a test bed for us to get used to this type of thing for future projects under development. Although it was a learning experience, we had fun as you can see in the video below.

Beach House Aloha Wear Photo Shoot (video)

Hawaiian clothing photo shoot group picture

Photo shoots are fun but they aren’t easy. It always takes a lot more planning and coordination than expected, no matter how many time we do it. Lucky for us, Geralyn at Hokuli’i Images has been our primary shoot photographer since we opened for business back in 1999. She’s fun, reliable and good at making the models feel relaxed, which is especially important if they’ve never worked together before. And it also helps to have a Talent Coordinator like Chad who can call upon many people to find the small handful of models that are available on the date of the shoot. And it especially helps to have someone like Robert who can pull small miracles by securing an awesome beach house on short notice. When everything comes together (and it somehow always does) we end up with a productive photo shoot that feels more like play than actual work. It’s not a bad way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning!

Fast Ukulele Song by Bruce Shimabukuro

After a rough performance, Bruce wrote a song that expressed his frustration with himself. I am sure a bad ukulele performance for him is still quite awesome. This is the second song that he played for us where the music really matched his inspiration for it. He’s definitely a good ukulele player. But his song writing skills are even more impressive.

Ukulele Lesson: Picking & Strumming (video)

Besides Hawaiian clothing, few other things are associated with Hawaii as much as the ukulele. By the way, the Hawaiian ukulele is actually based on a small guitar-like instrument that was brought to Hawaii by immigrants from Portugal. But that’s another story. The ukulele has always been a popular instrument because it’s small and relatively simple to play…although I can’t play it because I am what you would call “untalented”. Interest in the instrument has also risen in recent years because of the music of the late artist Israel Kamakawio’ole, especially his renditions of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and other songs.

Bruce Shimabukuro, a Hawaii ukulele musician and instructor, was kind enough to give us a free lesson on picking and strumming at Ukulele Pua Pua, and ukulele shop at the Sheraton Waikiki. His picking and strumming lesson is not meant to teach you how to play but rather simply to give you a starting point before you dive in and sign up for lessons and buy your own ukulele. I actually saw him perform live a couple times before and can tell you that he is both talented and quite the entertainer. And he also explains things very clearly. In fact if you ever visit Hawaii, I suggest you to Ukulele Pua Pua at the Sheraton Waikiki and see if you can get one of his free lessons just to see if the ukulele is something you’re interested in.

We hope you enjoy watching and listening to this video. Please give us your feedback as we hope this is just the first in a series of ukulele video lessons we will produce over the next few months.
