Palaka Shirt – Predecessor to Modern Hawaiian Shirt

One of the predecessors to the modern Hawaiian shirt is a blue and white checkered shirt called the palaka shirt. Once a standard work shirt for plantation workers, it was a favorite of former Hawaii governor John Waihee and many other local politicians, especially around election time. While we were preparing for a mini project, we found ourselves in search of this shirt. Finding these shirts nowadays can be difficult because most manufacturers have stopped making them although we have seem them recently readily available at the local Costco’s. But if you ever wanted to know a little bit about the history of the Aloha shirt, you’re looking at one of the predecessors!
