“Eat the Street” Food Truck Rally

I like tacos. So last night we went to the “Eat the Street” food truck rally on Kapiolani Blvd. I experienced my share of taco trucks in southern Cal during my college years and never really noticed that there were so many taco trucks in Honolulu. Most of the trucks served some sort of tacos with names like Xtreme Tacos, Korean Tacos to Go, and Shogunai Tacos.

The surprise of the night for me was that my favorite food truck was Melt, the grilled cheese specialists. Maybe it was all the butter they used or maybe I just like cheese. But whatever the secret was, their Triple Melt was kickass!

I hope all the truck people made a lot of money and that they have this event again because it was fun. The only thing that was missing was a beer truck. Maybe next time!

Tropic Fever Matching Shirts & Dresses

We just added the Tropic Fever matching Hawaiian dresses and shirts. Both are 100% cotton and made in Hawaii. The shirts comes in size M-4XL. For whatever reason, purple is always an unusually popular color. Maybe it’s because there aren’t many purple prints or maybe it’s because people like purple. Or both.

Kawamoto Okazuya

On our trip to the Big Island last week, we went to one of my favorite places to eat – Kawamoto’s. I have been going there ever since the glory days of Cyndi Lauper, Journey, and Weird Al Yankovic. I am sure it has been around much longer than that but that’s as far back as I can remember. Kawamoto’s is one of several popular okazuyas in Hilo but for whatever reason, it’s the only one my parents would ever take me to.

Kawamoto Store early on a Friday morning (like 6:30am)

One thing about Kawamoto’s is that they open early and often run out of food by lunch time. My favorite items are the cone sushi and teriyaki meat balls but also like the string bean tempura, sweet potato tempura and korean fried chicken.

Lots of good stuff to choose from!

As part of the tradition I got from my parents, we headed over to Queen Liliuokalani Gardens to eat while we looked at ducks, birds, snow capped Mauna Kea and Hilo Bay. It sure beats eating fast food for breakfast! If you’re ever in Hilo, I highly recommend stopping at Kawaomoto’s to grab your breakfast, brunch or lunch. But be warned that once they run out of food, they’re done for the day so get there early.

On a side note, we like animals,…my wife especially loves animals. So when we saw a baby-looking bird cruising fearlessly by our feet, we had to feed it. So we gave it some tempura crumbs. In the video, it’s the round bird with the very short tail.

Winter Snow in Hawaii

Winter snow on Mauna Kea

Winter snow on Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea, at 13,786 ft (from sea level), is the highest of Hawaii’s mountains. And because of that height, it gets quite a bit of snow every winter (in addition to being home to several powerful telescopes). The cool thing about snow on Mauna Kea is that you can ski, snow board or even slide on a body board down some of the slopes. The downside is that there is 40% less oxygen at that altitude so whatever you do, it’s best to do it in a very slow and calm manner. If you jump out of your car and run around yelling “snow! snow! snow!” like a kid, you’ll be winded in less than a minute and will probably get a headache that will last for hours. Trust me. But if you maintain discipline, you’ll be fine and will be rewarded with some spectacular views.

These Guys are Nutz!

The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is one of the more popular hikes on Oahu because it is easy and the scenery is quite good. But, I guess the scenery from the trail wasn’t good enough for these photographers. Whatever the pictures were for, I sure hope it was worth the risk!

That Shirt is Humango!

Most big dudes wear anywhere from 2XL to 4XL. Sumo wrestlers would probably wear a 6XL or 8XL if they decided that an Aloha shirt must be a part of their wardrobe. Here’s what a 28XL looks like. By my estimates, I think this shirt would be for someone about 10 ft tall weighing 1,200 lbs…give or take a couple hundred.

This shirt is actually made for business customers who want to put it on display in one of their stores. Just like the regular Hawaiian shirts we sell, this one has a matched pocket and coconut buttons, except the buttons on this shirt are about the size of a quarter.

Double Waterfall on Kauai

What’s better than a waterall? Two waterfalls! Alright, so maybe it’s not that big a deal. But of all the waterfalls I have seen in my life (and I have seen many…well…maybe a couple dozen or so), I don’t think I have ever seen a double waterfall.

Ukulele Lesson by Bruce Shimabukuro

If you a fan of the ukulele and want to learn how to play one, be sure to check out Bruce Shimabukuro’s free lesson on strumming and picking.

Bruce is both a recording artist and and instructor. I first got a chance to see him play in Japan, of all places. He was there as part of the Oahu Visitors Bureau expo in Fukuoka to promote tourism to Hawaii. He and his band wowed the crowd at a shopping mall and again at an official Japan-US formal dinner.

Time-Elapsed Beach Sunset

Sunsets are awesome but they do require a bit of a time commitment, especially if you plan on driving to the beach. For those of you busy bodies out there, this video is for you.

Bad Day to Film a Sunset

Normally when I set out to film a sunrise or sunset, weather is not a problem. In fact, even on days that look cloudy over the island interior, I still head out to the beach with confidence that the weather will clear up or is already sunny out there. It works out most of the time. But on this day, luck was not on my side.
