Sunrise at Sandy Beach Park

In all of my years in living in Hawaii, I have never once set foot on Sandy Beach. As a kid, I did all my body boarding at other places like Bellows, Sand Island, Waikiki, Waimanalo, etc. Sandy’s is famous for its powerful and dangerous shore break and is not someplace that the inexperienced should mess around with. That didn’t stop then candidate Barack Obama from squeezing in a body surfing session during his vacation in Hawaii during the 2008 presidential campaign.

So last Friday I decided to finally go to Sandy’s. But rather than risk injury by body surfing, I played it safe and just filmed the sunrise. It’s not as exciting as conquering the shore break, but it is certainly better for my health. Actually, Sandy’s is not dangerous all the time, but like all beaches, it pays to be respectful of the power of the ocean.

This video was shot at about 6:15 am and as you can see, there were already a few people playing in the water and just walking around and enjoying the morning sunrise.

New Products Update

I visited one of our manufacturers yesterday to get a preview of some of the new products they will be rolling out between now and January. They are throwing their hat in the muumuu manufacturing biz and will start out with 12 prints/colors to match some of their existing halter and tank flounce dresses (and men’s shirts, of course). We are particularly excited about their white-on-white muumuu to match their "Wedding Flower" print. This will give customers more choice when it comes to selecting their wedding dresses and shirts.

The manufacturer also previewed a few of their new rayon prints. They want to create an all new dress style for their rayon fabrics to differentiate them from their popular cotton dresses. They are open to suggestions so if you have any ideas on what kind of dress styles you would like to see, please let me know so I can pass this information on to them. Rayon falls on the body better than cotton and they are looking for a style that takes advantage of rayon’s physical characteristics. I think it is a good thing that they are seeking feedback from the customers before they invest in a new dress style.

Anyway, we will be adding their new products to our store as they become available at a steady pace over the next 5 months. These should include a bunch of new rayon and cotton prints, at least 2 muumuu styles, and at least 1 new Hawaiian dress style. So if you have a particular dress style in mind, please let us know!

Aloha!

Bon Dance in Honolulu, HI

Hawaii’s culture is a mixture of cultures from all over the world, particularly from Asia. In the late 1800s and early 1900s when Japanese immigrant workers came to Hawaii to work in the sugar plantations, they brought with them their culture and traditions. One such tradition that is still practiced today is the Bon Dance to honor and celebrate one’s ancestors. Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike of all ages participate in annual Bon Dances around Hawaii for religious and/or social purposes….

Statehood!

Hawaii became America’s 50th state on August 21, 1959 making this year
Hawaii’s 50th anniversary of statehood. Hawaii’s US Senator Daniel Inouye, a
decorated WWII veteran of the famed 442nd, has served as a Hawaii senator since
statehood. He’s been in office for so long that my dad actually met him when he
was a kid in high school! Senator Inouye visited Hilo High School (on the Big
Island) to give an assembly pep talk to my dad’s class. I met Senator Inouye a
few years ago and remember thinking to myself, "Man, I just shook the hand of a
guy who shook my dad’s hand when my dad was half my age!" Isn’t that nuts?

My dad remembers that when Hawaii became a state, people went crazy and drove
through the streets honking their horns in jubilation. This year, instead of
honking our horns and acting crazy, we’ll just celebrate Hawaii’s 50th
anniversary of statehood with a Statehood Sale. On top of that, if you’ve
bothered to read this far, you get a free 20% off coupon.

Coupon Code: 50thstate

Simply enter this code during checkout and get an additional 20% off your
order through Sunday, August 23, 2009.

Aloha!

Sangria for “Home Made Pizza” Theme Party

I’ve recently acquired a taste for sangria and have been wanting to make some at home for a party. Well, that opportunity suddenly popped up today. I didn’t even decide to make it until I got to the supermarket to get other ingredients. In case you’re wondering, tonight’s party theme is “Home Made Pizza”. While I made the crust from scratch, I didn’t have time to look up a recipe for the sangria so I decided to cheat a little. I saw a giant jug of sangria for $10 so I figured, what the heck.

I know I could probably have just chilled it and served it, but where’s the fun in that? Part of the excitement of drinking sangria is seeing all the fruits floating around. So I bought a couple of apples and oranges. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that sangria contains many other fruits like pears, peaches, pineapple, etc. Next time when I make it from scratch, I will go with all of those fruits and more. But for tonight, it’s just apples and oranges.

I only got apples and oranges this time, but next time I will go all out.

This giant jug-o-sangria cost just $10,…what a deal, I think.

sangria ready to be chilled
The jug and fruits made a lot more than I expected!

So anyway, this will probably be the featured beverage for the party tonight. I am even making big ice to put in these containers to keep the sangria chilled during the party. I think this will go well with the pizza I’m making tonight. It sure looks festive! I can’t wait for everyone to come over so I can taste this fun looking beverage!

Tide Pool Fish Watching

Tide pools are a great place to look at little fish, crabs, and other sea creatures. And one of the best places for this is a place called Sharks Cove on the North Shore just past Waimea Bay. During the summer months, the water is placid making it very safe for beginners to walk around in the tide pools without getting pounded by the surf. For the slightly more experienced water people, the cove to the right of the tide pools offers pretty good snorkeling.

I took this picture early yesterday morning but there were already several people in the tide pool area and at least 6 people snorkeling.

The during the winter months, this very same place can be very dangerous, as you can clearly see in this picture taken during December.

The beaches along the North Shore of Oahu are typically calm during the summer. The large surf that the the North Shore is famous for comes during the winter months. While this may be good for experienced surfers and spectators, it also keeps the lifeguards busy.
